What is the Oculus Quest 2 128 GB Version?

Rumors of Oculus replacing their base 64 GB version of the Oculus Quest 2 started in early summer 2021. Manufacturing links and regulatory documents pointed to a new VR headset with 128 GB storage from Oculus.

At the time, fans did not know if this was the Quest 2, Quest 2 Pro, Quest 3, or other hardware.

Now we know that this is a hardware update to the Quest 2. It increases the base model’s hard drive from 64 GB up to 128 GB.

Oculus Quest 2 128 GB vs 64 GB: Any Other Differences?

There are no other differences in the Oculus Quest 2 hardware in the new 128 GB version. All other features, hardware, and software are identical.

If you have the original 64 GB headset, the only reason to upgrade would be for more hardware.

What was the release date of the Oculus Quest 2 128 GB?

The new version of the headset was released at midnight local time around the world on August 24th. Local retailers began to update their product listings at midnight.

Virtual reality fans in Australia noticed the changes first. Time zones around the world began watching for their update at midnight as well.

How much does the new 128 GB version cost?

The 128 GB version of the Oculus Quest 2 retails for $299 USD. This is the exact same price as the original 64 GB version.

The upgraded 256 GB version retails for $399 USD MSRP.

Is the 128 GB version worth it?

Since the new 128 GB version is the exact same price as the original 64 GB version, we recommend it. Getting double the storage space for the same price is a good deal.

The size of VR games on the Oculus Quest 2 have been increasing over the past number of months. With upcoming Resident Evil and other AAA titles in the works, VR game sizes will continue to go up.

A leak from Sony suggests that they are working with AAA designers to include VR support in upcoming PS5 games. If any of these games come to the Quest platform, we expect them to take up space as well.

Can You Upgrade the Storage on the Oculus Quest 2

No, you cannot upgrade the hard drive in the Oculus Quest 2. Once you purchase the 64 or 128 or 256 version, you are stuck with that.

You can plugin a compatible hard drive into the device’s USB-C slot, but there are some things to be aware of:

  • You need to strap this hard drive to your head somewhere as a counterweight
  • You will not be able to store games on this external hard drive
  • Accessing files from within the Oculus OS is hit-and-miss

An external hard drive is mostly useful for storing media files for playback. You can check out our guide hard drives and other Oculus Quest 2 accessories for more information.
