Oculus Quest 2 Jailbreak: Overview
Can you jailbreak the Oculus Quest 2?
Shortly before the release of the Oculus Quest 2, Facebook announced that it was going to make having a Facebook social media account mandatory in order to use the new VR headset. Naturally, this upset a lot of potential buyers who don’t want anything to do with Facebook’s social media network.
In addition, this change brings out a number of other red flags:
- What if you are banned from Facebook for any reason? Why should this cut off access from your VR hardware which you purchased?
- What kind of privacy issues arise by having your social media account linked with your VR game account?
- If you delete your Facebook account in the future, what happens to your Oculus game library?
Right after the device was released, Robert Long at Mozilla offered up $5,000 to anyone willing to jailbreak the Oculus Quest 2. Former Oculus founder, Palmer Luckey, put up $5,000 of his own money to anyone willing to create the jailbreak. Just two weeks after the release of the headset, a developer has claimed to have a full hardware Quest 2 jailbreak solution.
The exact method of how it works is not known yet, but instructions have been sent to and verified by XRSI.
XRSI Statement
XRSI is a non-profit that promotes privacy and security in the XR space. They released the following statement about the new Oculus Quest 2 jailbreak:
A researcher from the XR community has gained root access to Oculus Quest 2 and is able to bypass Facebook Login. XRSI’s own researchers have validated this jailbreak and are currently working to gather assurances to protect the individuals who discovered these methods of jailbreak. We have also learned there are other researchers out there, who have gained similar access and are unsure how to proceed without clear policies around the right to repair. If you are one of those researchers, we urge you to contact us and share the details in a secure manner. Contact XR Safety Initiative XRSI via [email protected] or Use Signal 510-990-4438

Quest 2 Jailbreak Warnings
If you jailbreak the Oculus Quest 2, what can Facebook do about it? One issues is the ‘Right to Repair’, the ability to have full control over the hardware and software you own. This law has allowed users to jailbreak and modify their smartphones and watches as they wish. It protects the right of users to jailbreak devices. XRSI is working to extend this ‘Right to Repair’ to VR headsets as well.
Without this right, Facebook has the ability to permanently ban or render inactive a user’s VR headset for jailbreaking the device. There is no word on how or if this is possible. Facebook would need a method to identify those users who have jailbroken the device and then would need to implement a ban policy. This would be unprecedented and is a step that Apple, famous for being against jailbreaking, has never taken.
Users should be aware of the potential risk in jailbreaking their hardware and decide if they want to proceed or not.
