Meta Quest 2 Introduction
The Meta Quest 2 is the highest selling VR headset of all time. Its biggest draw is that it is completely wireless with no cables or connection to a PC necessary. Instead, Meta has created a broad Android ecosystem filled with high quality apps and games. You can also connect the headset to a PC wired or wirelessly and play all SteamVR games as well.
The Quest 2 contains a few other features that are unique to it including hand tracking capabilities and passthrough video cameras.
Meta has invested heavily in the product, bringing exclusive game titles like Resident Evil, Myst, and Grand Theft Auto to the platform. Unlike most other consoles which are suffering from a computer chip shortage, the Meta Quest 2 has been heavily available to purchase in 2021 and 2022.

Playstation VR2 Introduction
The Playstation VR2 is the successor to the original PSVR, developed from the ground up for the new Playstation 5 console.

One of the main selling features of the original Playstation VR was its wide selection of exclusive games that could be played with the hardware. Sony has been working with game developers to ensure that the new PSVR2 has good support as well.

Below, we’ll compare the important parts of the Meta Quest 2 vs Playstation VR2 in more detail.
Meta Quest 2 vs Playstation VR2 Displays and Performance
The Meta Quest 2 contains a single panel LCD screen. It is a higher-resolution fast-switching LCD display. The resolution on the headset is 1832 x 1920 per eye.
Overall, this is about 50% more pixels in the screen than the original Quest 1 and more than in the Oculus Rift S too. The Quest 2 has an RGB stripe display, which fits pixels much nicer together on the screen. This eliminates the amount of black space between each pixel, letting everything look clear and crisp in your vision.
The overall display on the Playstation VR2 is 4000 x 2080 pixels, 2000 x 2040 per eye. There is a full 4K HDR display in the PSVR2 headset, which gives it an advantage over the Quest 2. The panel on the PSVR is OLED, which gives it a wider color spectrum to work with. This is preferred, but more expensive than traditional LCD screens.
Field of View
The Meta Quest 2 has a horizontal and vertical field of view of 90 degrees.
Sony has announced a field of view of 110 degrees on the PSVR2. We aren’t sure if this is horizontal, vertical, or diagonal in direction yet.
Refresh Rate
The Meta Quest 2 and the Playstation VR2 have the same refresh rate of 90 Hz or 120 Hz. Game developers must program their games for the desired rate.
Lens Adjustment
The Quest 2 has a 3-point lens adjustment which lets you place the lenses at 58, 63, or 68 mm wide. This is fine for 90% of the population.
The Playstation VR2 headset has a lens separation adjustment dial for perfecting the display in your vision. We aren’t sure what the full range of the headset is so far, but a dial will give a more granular adjustment for players.
Overall Advantage: Playstation VR2, but not by much. The Quest 2 has proven to have a good number of features for its price point. It looks like Sony has made some strategic improvements with the OLED panel and adjustable lenses to give it an advantage over the Quest 2.
Connection and Cables
The main advantage of the Meta Quest 2 is that it is completely wireless. All tracking is inside-out via cameras installed on the headset and it does not need any external base stations. You can also play games from its library via the built in processor and hard drive. In the last year, there are a number of awesome Quest games to play.
If you still like to play higher quality PC VR games, the Quest 2 can connect to your PC wirelessly via Air Link and wired via Oculus Link. This gives you the option to play your SteamVR library as you wish.
The Playstation VR2 connects to your PS5 console via a single wired USB-C cable. It does not have the option to go wireless yet, though a wireless adapter is one of the top things on most fan’s wish list.
How much you love playing VR wirelessly will affect how you feel about the game. Right now, the Playstation VR2’s single cable design will be equivalent to using Oculus Link. If Oculus is able to continue getting AAA games for its Android platform, it might become tougher to justify the tethered connection.
Advantage: Meta Quest 2
Meta Quest 2 vs Playstation VR2 Tracking
Like its predecessor, the Meta Quest 2 contains inside-out tracking that does not require any external base stations to monitor your movement. All tracking of your position comes from four external-facing cameras installed on the Quest 2. When you put on your headset, you have to draw a safe guardian around your play space. Your cameras make sure that you stay within this play space and do not go outside of it.
The Playstation VR2 also features inside-out tracking. Cameras in the headset that point out into your environment take care of your positioning and movement. You no longer need the Playstation Eye webcam setup over your TV in order to watch you.
The PSVR2 will contain full eye tracking that will detect the motion of your eyes. Looking in specific directions can create additional inputs for your game character. Sony promises that eye tracking will allow you to interact more intuitively with your environment and increase realism. Some of the patents filed below hint at the possibilities of this feature.
Inside-out tracking has been preferred by fans ever since the Meta Quest 2 nearly perfected it. We are excited to see how Sony implements the technology for the new VR headset. Until then, the Meta Quest 2 vs Playstation VR2 for tracking, we give the advantage to Meta.
Advantage: Meta Quest 2 (until Sony shows us they’ve done just as well as Meta has with the technology)
Meta Quest 2 vs Playstation VR2 Controllers
The Meta Quest 2 headset improved Touch controllers over the last generation with better ergonomics.
- The thumb area has been widened with more space.
- The tracking ring appears to be larger and more angled backwards. This should improve the inside-out tracking on the controllers.
- The controllers no longer have a cross-hatched grip on the hand piece.
- The battery compartment is clipped in instead of a magnetic on the last generation controller, so they don’t slip off on accident ever.
The new generation touch controllers have 4x the battery life of the last generation, which is a huge improvement. Part of this was achieved by reducing the infrared sensors in the ring. There was original concern that this might decrease the accuracy, but those claims have not materialized.
The PSVR2 Sense controllers has been redesigned with a new halo shape. The controllers have both haptic feedback and adaptive triggers which provide for ultra-realism and hand tracking. The Playstation VR2 Sense controller has a six-axis motion system, three-axis gyroscope and three-axis accelerometer. Each controller has a built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery. They communicate back to the headset via Bluetooth 5.1 technology.
The new PSVR Sense controller has a great halo look and feel to them. Quest 2 vs Playstation VR2, both controllers are nearly identical in terms of the number of buttons. The Sense controller has a force touch feature that can “lock” a button until you need to use it. Sony gave an example in a game where a door might be locked until you have a key, which will let you press and unlock the door.
Advantage: Playstation VR2 (only slightly)
Meta Quest 2 vs Playstation VR2 Games
The Meta Quest 2 has the ability to play games from 3 different sources:
Combined, these three sources provide over 1,000 different games for the Meta Quest 2. Meta has been working hard to bring exclusive games to the platform, with titles like Population: ONE, Myst, Carve Snowboarding, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas launching on the platform first.
So far, not a lot of titles have been confirmed for the Playstation VR2. However, Sony has a great relationship with a lot of developers and was previously able to convince some to add VR support to previous games. If Sony can leverage these relationships, we should expect to see a few PSVR2 exclusive games.
One game already announced for the PSVR2 is Horizon Call of the Mountain. The sequel to the popular Horizon Zero Dawn game is confirmed to have full VR support. We wait patiently for more announcements in the future.
Advantage: Meta Quest 2
Before our conclusion, we want to compare the Quest 2 vs Playstation VR2 in terms of other special features they have.
Other Nice Meta Quest 2 Features
Meta has been refining their VR software platform over the past while and they have added a few key features that polish everything up:
- Oculus Move – An in-game display that tracks your calories burned and movement for the day.
- Oculus Home – A full virtual environment that you launch games and experiences from
- 2D Android Apps – Meta has added support for select 2D apps so that you can stay connected to Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and others while in virtual reality
- SpaceSense – The ability to track when foreign objects enter your playspace and automatically pause your game
These little features add up to the overall experience on the Quest 2.
Other Nice Playstation VR2 Features
Sony has implemented new sensory features directly into the new headset:
- 3D spatial audio makes you feel like you are right into the game
- Haptic feedback in the headset provides smart vibrations that make you feel like you are right inside of the game.
The examples from Sony on haptic feedback is that gamers can feel a character’s elevated pulse during tense moments, the rush of objects passing close to the character’s head, or the thrust of a vehicle as the character speeds forward.
Conclusion
Overall, the Meta Quest 2 and Playstation VR2 are going to dominate the VR space for the next number of years. Between the Quest 2 vs Playstation VR2, each system has a lot of great features to like. In terms of exclusive quality games and specs, the PSVR2 looks to have a slight edge. It should, since the hardware will be 2 years newer than the Quest 2.
What we don’t know is whether the support and polish of the PSVR2 will match the Quest 2.
The other big factor in which device you should buy will depend on whether you already have a PS5 game console or not. If you don’t, the overall cost to get started with Sony’s VR system is a lot higher. If you already enjoy your console, the incremental cost for the PSVR2 headset is comparable to the Quest 2.
