I own Quest 3 and got an early demo of Meta VR Glasses, so this comparison covers the specs, the price, and what the differences mean once the headset is actually on your face. I also cover the cheaper Quest 3S, since it’s the other option most people are deciding between.

Quick Verdict: Meta VR Glasses vs Meta Quest 3

Choose Meta VR Glasses if you mostly watch movies, work on virtual screens, or play seated games, and you want the lightest, sharpest Meta headset. You’ll pay more than twice the price of a Quest 3 and wait until spring 2027.

Choose Meta Quest 3 if VR gaming is the main reason you want a headset. It costs less than half as much, has a much wider field of view, comes with controllers, plays PC VR games, and you can buy it today.

Choose Meta Quest 3S if you want the cheapest way into the same Quest game library. At $349.99 it plays the same games as Quest 3, with a softer image and a narrower view.

Meta VR Glasses vs Meta Quest 3 vs Quest 3S Specs: Side-by-Side Comparison

Meta VR Glasses Price vs Quest 3 Price: $1,299.99 vs $599.99

Meta VR Glasses cost $1,299.99 in the US. That gets you the glasses, the compute puck, and a 45W USB-C charger.

Two things push the real cost higher. Touch Plus controllers aren’t in the box, and you’ll want them for most existing Quest games. Prescription inserts are also extra if you wear glasses.

Meta Quest 3 costs $599.99 with 512GB of storage and includes both controllers. So even before accessories, VR Glasses cost more than two Quest 3 headsets.

Storage is worth a look too. VR Glasses have 128GB built in plus a microSD slot, while Quest 3 has 512GB. If you install a lot of big games, plan on adding a microSD card to VR Glasses.

Meta VR Glasses Release Date: Spring 2027

Meta says VR Glasses go on sale in spring 2027 in the US, UK, Canada, much of Europe, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. Pre-orders haven’t opened yet.

Quest 3 and Quest 3S are available now from Meta and most big retailers.

Quest 3 Price Increase: Why Quest 3 Now Costs $599.99

If you remember Quest 3 at $499.99, you’re not wrong. Meta raised Quest prices in April 2026, blaming the rising cost of memory chips.

Quest 3 went from $499.99 to $599.99. Quest 3S went from $299.99 to $349.99 for 128GB, and from $399.99 to $449.99 for 256GB. The 128GB Quest 3 had already been discontinued, so 512GB is now the only Quest 3 you can buy new.

Meta VR Glasses Weight vs Quest 3 Weight: 100g vs 515g

This is the biggest difference you’ll feel. Quest 3 weighs 515 grams, and all of it sits on your face and head. Meta VR Glasses weigh about 100 grams on your face, which is why Meta calls them 5x lighter than Quest 3.

The catch is the puck. The chip and battery live in a 300-gram puck that connects to the glasses with a thin optical cable and sits in your pocket or on a table. So the total system weighs a little less than a Quest 3, but your neck only carries a fifth of it.

With my Quest 3, the front-heavy weight usually ends a long session before the battery does. Meta VR Glasses skip the head strap completely. They fold like normal glasses and rest on adjustable nose pads and your ears.

Fit matters more with so little holding them on. They come in two sizes with several nose pads in the box. In early hands-ons, reviewers found the smaller size could squeeze and slip, so try both if you can.

Meta VR Glasses Resolution vs Quest 3 Resolution: 37 PPD vs 25 PPD

Meta VR Glasses have 2,412 x 2,288 micro-OLED displays per eye, which works out to 37 pixels per degree. Quest 3 has 2,064 x 2,208 LCD panels at 25 pixels per degree.

In practice, that means small text is noticeably crisper on VR Glasses, and the screen door effect is much harder to spot. Micro-OLED also gives you true blacks and HDR (Dolby Vision), so dark movie scenes look like a good TV instead of a grayish LCD.

Quest 3 is still sharp enough for games and video, and it’s a big step up from Quest 2. But if you read a lot of text or watch a lot of movies in VR, the VR Glasses image is a clear upgrade.

Field of view is where Quest 3 wins, and it’s the trade-off to think hardest about. Quest 3 shows 110 degrees horizontally. Meta VR Glasses show 70 degrees horizontally and 66 vertically.

In a game, that difference is easy to notice. On Quest 3, the world fills most of your vision. On VR Glasses, it feels more like looking through a large window, with the real room visible around the edges.

For movies and virtual monitors, the narrower view barely matters, because the screen sits in front of you anyway. For fast games where things come at you from the side, Quest 3 feels more immersive. Meta sells an optional light blocker if you want to hide the room around the edges.

Meta VR Glasses Games vs Quest 3 Games: Do Quest Games Work on Meta VR Glasses?

Yes. Meta VR Glasses run Horizon OS, the same software as Quest 3, and use the same store. Your existing Quest library carries over, and games render at higher resolution thanks to the faster chip and eye-tracked foveated rendering.

The difference is how you play. VR Glasses are built around hand and eye tracking, and Meta says more than 75 games and apps will be ready for hand tracking at launch. That includes Supernatural, Tetris Effect in mixed reality, Two Point Hospital, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and a new hand-tracked Beat Saber mode called Flux.

Most big Quest games still need controllers, though. And with the puck cabled to your pocket, fast games where you spin and duck are likely to feel less free than on an all-in-one headset. If you mostly play active games like Beat Saber on Expert, Gorilla Tag, or shooters, Quest 3’s wider view and included controllers make it the better gaming headset. Do Quest 3 Controllers Work With Meta VR Glasses?

Yes. Meta VR Glasses pair with the same Touch Plus controllers that come with Quest 3 and Quest 3S. If you already own a Quest, you can reuse its controllers and skip buying a new pair.

Can Meta VR Glasses Play PC VR and Steam Games?

Meta hasn’t confirmed PC VR support for VR Glasses yet. The USB-C port on the puck accepts video from laptops, phones, and handhelds, but that shows your device on a big flat screen. It isn’t the same as playing SteamVR games in full VR.

Meta rates VR Glasses at about 3 hours of mixed use or video per charge. Quest 3 averages about 2.2 hours, and Quest 3S about 2.5 hours.

That extra time is enough to finish a full movie on VR Glasses without worrying. The puck also charges while you use it, using the included 45W charger, so you can plug in for longer sessions.

Meta VR Glasses Passthrough vs Quest 3 Passthrough: Mixed Reality Compared

Both are mixed reality headsets that show your room in full color through cameras. Quest 3’s passthrough is good, but you’ll see some warping around your hands and objects close to your face.

Early hands-on reports called VR Glasses’ passthrough the best on any standalone headset so far, with no visible seams or bending. They also add eye and face tracking, which Quest 3 doesn’t have. That makes your avatar’s expressions look more natural and lets you select things just by looking at them.

Meta VR Glasses for Movies and Work vs Quest 3

Movies are where VR Glasses make the strongest case. They’re the first VR headset to be IMAX Enhanced certified, support Dolby Vision HDR, and play 3D movies like Avengers: Infinity War. Streaming apps at launch include Disney+, YouTube, HBO Max, Prime Video, and Peacock.

Quest 3 can watch the same streaming apps, but the LCD screen can’t match OLED blacks. Neither headset has a native Netflix app, so on both you’ll use Netflix in the web browser.

For work, VR Glasses turn your Mac or PC into multiple large virtual screens. You can also plug a laptop, phone, or handheld into the puck’s USB-C port. Quest 3 can run virtual monitors too, through Meta’s own tools or Virtual Desktop, but after an hour the weight on your face is hard to ignore.

Meta VR Glasses Prescription Inserts vs Wearing Glasses in Quest 3

If you wear glasses, this is a real difference. Quest 3 has an adjustment that moves the lenses further from your eyes, so most people can wear their normal glasses inside it. Quest 3S comes with a glasses spacer.

Also check your IPD (the distance between your pupils). VR Glasses adjust from 56 to 70mm, and they’re the first Meta headset that can set each eye separately. Quest 3 covers a wider 53 to 75mm range, so if your IPD is near either end, Quest 3 is the safer fit until you can try VR Glasses in person.

Meta VR Glasses vs Quest 3S: Is the Cheaper Quest the Better Deal?

Quest 3S costs $349.99, or $449.99 for 256GB. That’s less than a third of the VR Glasses price, and it plays the same games on the same chip as Quest 3.

The savings come from the screen and lenses. Quest 3S has 20 pixels per degree, older Fresnel lenses, and a 96-degree field of view. That’s still wider than VR Glasses, but next to VR Glasses’ 37 PPD micro-OLED image, the 3S looks soft, especially for text and movies.

Should I Buy Meta Quest 3 Now or Wait for Meta VR Glasses?

Buy Quest 3 now if you want to play VR games this year. VR Glasses won’t ship until spring 2027, and Meta built them as a lighter, pricier headset for movies, work, and seated play rather than as a Quest 3 replacement.

Wait for VR Glasses if comfort and image quality matter more to you than field of view, you already mostly use your headset for video, or you can’t stand Quest 3’s weight.

Meta says it’s working on several next-generation headsets, including a gaming-focused one, but reports point to late 2027 at the earliest. Meta’s naming is confusing right now, because three different product lines use the Meta name:

• Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S are VR headsets with a head strap. Some stores list them as “Meta VR glasses,” but they’re not the new product.
• Meta VR Glasses (codename Phoenix) are a full VR headset shaped like a pair of glasses, with a separate compute puck.
• Ray-Ban Meta and other Meta AI glasses are smart glasses with cameras, speakers, and Meta AI. They don’t do VR at all.
